Stage 1 excursion programs at Georges River EEC
Immerse your Year 1 students in authentic outdoor learning along the freshwater environments of the Georges River. Our fieldwork programs align seamlessly with NSW HSIE syllabus outcomes (NESA 2024), fostering strong connections to Country and practical environmental care.
Fieldwork learning modules
'People are connected to places and groups.'
Designed for Stage 1 students, each module provides structured, tactile experiences to investigate freshwater habitats, Aboriginal culture, and caring for local waterways.
At the Georges River EEC you can come and meet the friendly team, explore the land, and interact with the range of animals as they provide you with environment and behavioural enrichment, such as feeding and handling.

Nature detectives bushwalk
The students become nature detectives on guided bushwalks, exploring vegetation, tracking wildlife and building simple teepee shelters using natural materials and will learn how people connect to places, care for water environments and learn about the past. Students explore Aboriginal Peoples’ responsibilities to Country, map local places and recognise community symbols.
Outcome: HS1-ACH-01 | HSI-GEO-01
Aboriginal connections to Country
Students learn about the native plants along the river, their roles in nature and roles they still have today like the Casuarina Glauca known as the Swamp Oak that was used as hand soap by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Students will also get a demonstration by the teachers
Outcome: HS1-ACH-01
Freshwater habitats & care
Through sensory mapping and active water conservation games, students investigate the difference between saltwater and freshwater, meet freshwater river creatures, and learn to care for waterways
Outcome: HS1-GEO-01

Hands-on syllabus alignment
Every activity directly links to the NSW Stage 1 HSIE Geography syllabus (NESA 2024). Students experience the health benefits of spending time in nature, map natural and man-made landmarks along the river, and develop lifelong stewardship for Australia's water environments.
Plan and prepare your class
It's important to ensure all students bring a litter-free lunch, a reusable water bottle, and sturdy walking shoes. If your group requires adjustments for students with additional learning or physical needs, reach out to the team in advance and they can tailor the track routes and activities accordingly.
